Brownie is one of the Jewel Eight. Dian forces him to use his power to delete the memories of the scientists who could stop the asteroid's course towards Earth, itself caused by Alex. Rinko and the others recover him and Alex through a Jewel Game of kick-the-can.
Brownie's jewel motif is the brown quartz, which is another name for the mineral smoky quartz. Smoky quartz is a silicon dioxide crystal; the smoky colour results from free silicon, formed from the silicon dioxide by natural irradiation.
Alex and Brownie are the only two members of the Jewel Eight to work together. In most seasons after that, they appear together.
Brownie's species and spike color may be a reference to the iconic video game character Sonic the Hedgehog, the well-known mascot of the company Sega. The Jewelpet franchise in general is created both by Sanrio and Sega Sammy Holdings, though this might be a coincedence.
